Oakland: Paramount Theater

From 1931 until 1079, this Art Modern movie palace enthralled patrons with its gold carvings and Egyptian-style statues.  By the late sixties, though, the site head fallen into drastic decline.  The Oakland is not only home to the orchestra, but also a venue for concerts, shows, and the occasional movie.  One of the most evocative stops on the tour is the black-lacquered smoking room, once reserved for women.  2025 Broadway; 510/893-2300.
