Gingin, first explored in 1830 within a year of the founding of Perth and settled the following year, retains the charm of an English village.

There are many fine examples of traditional architecture, including the 1863-vintage St. Luke’s Angelican Church, the former Granville Hotel and Philbey’s Cottage.  Dewar’s House, an imposing two-storey residence which was opened as a hotel in 1886, has been maintained in its original colonial style by the present private owner.

Gingin is the starting point for an attractive drive through the Cheriton Valley past a number of fine historic homesteads including Cheriton Cottage, the Georgian-style Strathalbyn, Whakes and the 1871-vintage Smithfield.
