Graveyard Fields

Graveyard Fields

The Graveyard Fields got their name after a devastating forest fire in 1925 that burned out the timber, leaving only stumps. Son covered with moss, the stumps came to resemble tombstones.

The rushing waters of the Yellowstone Prong of  East Fork of the Pigeon River pour over golden rocks in two fall salon this hike, which combines the Graveyard Fields Loop Trail and two short side trips to view the falls.

From the parking area, follow the paved trail down to the Yellowstone Prong and cross the foot-bridge. Turn right and descend a quarter mile to view the road 60-foot cascade of Second Falls. Return to the trail and continue upstream, keeping left (on the Graveyard Fields Loop) at the junction with the Graveyard Ride Trail. At the next intersection, take the side trail straight on for half a mile to the Upper Falls, a 50-foot cascade rushing between two rocks and down a stone channel.  Back track and continue following the loop trail through graveyard Fields back to the trailhead.

Getting there:  From the junction of US 276 and the Parkway in Pisgah National Forest, go south to Graveyard in Pisgah National Forest, go south to Graveyard Fields Overlook at Parkway mile 419.
