Bibi Miriam Mausoleum, in the ancient city of Qalhat

You can enjoy a conventional sun-and-sea vacation in Oman without straying from the Muscat area.  But it would be a mistake not to include some exploration of the interior and the coast.  It’s perfectly feasible to buy a map, rent a four-wheel drive, and head off into the Empty Quarter;  however, it was strongly advise using an experienced guide.  You will see and learn more, avoid potentially dangerous, situations, and make less impact on the environment and its people.

Heide Beal, based in Muscat, has been organizing specialized tours in Oman (for groups of 2 to 16) for several years.  Her trips are tailored to suit yoru particular interests.  Travel is mostly by four-wheel drive but may involve going by camel and on foot.  You might spend the night in the desert or a wadi, or at sea on a yacht.  Beal is a fascinating and delightful companion:  an old expert on Oman’s wildlife, history, and archaeology.  Contact her at Heidi Beal Tours, Gulf Explorers, Box 2031, Ruwi, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman, 968/799-928, fax 968/799-928.
